COLNE Orchestra is tuning up and all set to celebrate the life of one of its past members -Titanic bandmaster Wallace Hartley - at a special concert this Sunday.

It’s the world premiere of a new concerto written by a Pendle composer specially to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

And it’s being performed at Holy Trinity Church in Colne, which is also celebrating its centenary this year. The church is close to where Wallace Hartley went - Colne’s Bethel Independent Methodist Chapel.

Written by Earby composer Peter Young, the concerto for violin and orchestra has been named “Wanderings and Returns: Reflections on a Musical Life”. Violinist Anne Heaton will play the violin solo for the concerto’s premiere.

Coun. Paul White, who represents tourism in Pendle, said: “Colne is very proud of its Wallace Hartley connection and this concerto is a fitting tribute to his bravery. I’m very much looking forward to being in the audience of this commemorative concert.”

Also in the audience will be two competition winners who helped name the concerto. They are 15-year-old Shane Pengelly from Colne and Nubia Farquharson from Roughlee.

The Mayor of Pendle, Coun. Asjad Mahmood, will also be there.

Tickets are still available for the concert which starts at 7-30 p.m. at £6 for adults and £4 for children.

To get your tickets, call the Titanic in Lancashire Museum in Colne on 861833 or email titanicinlancs@hotmail.com.

The concerto’s composer Peter Young said: “I feel honoured to compose a piece especially about the life of Colne’s famous son who died so tragically, so young. The concerto is a reflection of both Wallace’s musical life here in Colne and his travels on board the Mauretania and the Titanic.”

The concert is just a part of the Titanic in Lancashire festival. Still to come in the festival is a major exhibition called Titanic 100 in Colne Muni from June 27th to July 6th.
