UPDATE: Nearly 50 Colne homes plunged into darkness

Breaking News

Electricity North West have apologised after nearly 50 homes in Colne were plunged into darkness last night.

Houses between Albert Road and Brown Street West had their electricity cut off at 7-16pm last night, due to an underground cable fault. All problems were resolved by 1-15pm today.

According to Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, who lives in Colne, this is the fourth or fifth time this month that houses and businesses have been left with no heating.

While Electricity North West have stated that a total of 48 customers were left to deal with the power cut, Mr Stephenson believes the problem is bigger when considering that businesses, street lights and pedestrian crossings, were also affected.

He said: “An old lady got stuck on her stair lift half way up her staircase last night.

“These are the kind of issues this has caused.

“Residents have raised complaints.”

He previously tweeted: “Returned home to #Colne to find my part of town affected by a power cut again (4th or 5th time in a month)...beyond a joke for residents.”

And Phil Briggs, response manager for Electricity North West, said: “I apologise to customers affected by this persistent underground cable fault. The nature of these faults makes them very difficult to identify.

“Our engineers have been on site and used specialist equipment to detect the exact location of the fault so that we could unearth the cable in the right place to repair it. We restored power to all customers by 1.15pm today.”

It is also thought that The Crown Hotel was left in complete darkness, and last night there were reports of customers playing darts by candlelight.

If you have been affected by the power cut please contact Rebecca Cohen by e-mailing rebecca.cohen@jpress.co.uk.

Anybody experiencing any issues with electricity should call Electricity North West’s 24-hour free emergency line on 0800 195 4141.
