‘Waxathon’ helps Earby woman fund South American charity trek

An Earby woman has hit her target to fund a trip to South America next year on a charity trekking trip.

Nicola Haines, of Highfield Road, Earby, has raised almost £5,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support since she began collecting in August ahead of a trip to Peru next May.

The 24-year-old has held various fund-raising events during the last three months, the latest one being a charity wax where her friend Ricky Taylor made a smooth move by giving his body the hair free treatment, raising £1,150 in the process.

Local singers Tom and Giz performed, a DJ played and there was a pie and peas supper. Macmillan’s fund-raising manager for East Lancashire also went along to receive a £500 cheque donated by Earby Conservative Club.

Nicola decided to raise money for Macmillan after her dad, Robert, was diagnosed with cancer of the voicebox earlier this year. He is continuing his recovery following treatment.

Next May, Nicola will be toughing it out in the mountainous terrain of Peru where she will be walking up to 12 hours a day following the Inca trail, finishing at Machu Picchu.

She has been gradually building her training up, but will step it up even more as she prepares to depart.

Nicola said: “I’m doing really well with my funding. I’ve bought all my gear – waterproof jacket, waterproof pants and special boots – so I’ve no excuse now.

“Macmillan will send me a 16-week plan in January for training, but I still plan to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks and go to the Lake District one weekend as well. I’m more bothered about the insects than the camping and walking.”

Plans are already in place to boost funding further with a raffle at the Old Stone Trough, Kelbrook, on Sunday, December 2nd and collections in Barnoldswick, Earby and Skipton on Friday, December 21st, when Nicola and two others will head out on to the streets dressed as elves.
