New booklet links walks with buses around Pendle

A NEW booklet about walks in and around Pendle complete with bus links has been officially launched in Foulridge.
It will help people explore the beautiful Pendle area and it is a joint venture between one of the area’s leading countryside writers, Colin Speakman, and the Burnley and Pendle Transdev bus company.
It is being distributed free of charge from the Burnley and Pendle’s offices plus tourist centres and libraries throughout the area.
It features walks and days out that can be enjoyed using the company’s Mainline services and is designed to take advantage of the £5 Silver Day unlimited travel ticket.
The launch took place at Cafe Cargo in Foulridge, which is itself a great walk point as it sits on the wharf of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The Mayor of Pendle, Coun. Nadeem Ahmed, took part in the embarkment of the booklet.
Called “Days out in Borderlands”, it suggests five walks that can be enjoyed using the Mainline services. For example, there are walks around Foulridge, Thornton-in-Craven, Sabden, Laneshaw Bridge, Gisburn and Clitheroe. There are also brief guides to some of the towns, villages and attractions in the area that provide an excellent focus for serious and casual walkers
Colin Speakman explained: “It’s been a pleasure to work with B&P on the booklet. Mainline services pass through some of the most beautiful areas in East Lancashire.
“The Mainline and Lancashire United routes pass through an astonishing contrast in scenery, from the busy towns, through rich pasture and parkland, to heather moors and high summits. In just a few minutes you are in the real countryside, magnificent walking country which is yours to explore for a full day or just an afternoon.”
Mainline’s marketing director, Nigel Eggleton, added: “We are delighted to have worked with Colin and his son Dorian on the booklet. We think it’s an excellent way to enjoy our buses.
“You can not only relax, but because seating is higher up than in a car, you enjoy far better, uninterrupted views across walls and hedges. And there’s a much lower carbon footprint so it’s better for the environment!
“You can get off the bus at one of several attractive locations for lunch, afternoon tea or to take a pleasant walk. No need to worry about where to park, if you are a walker you can plan a linear walk without having to retrace your steps back to a parked vehicle - just pick up the bus at the next place along the route.”
A special bus with “Borderlands” on the destination display made its way to Foulridge for the launch on Friday.
