New doctors at Whitefield Health Care, Nelson

TWO new doctors have joined the team at Whitefield Health Care in Nelson.

Lancashire born and bred, the family doctors will play a key role in expanding and developing the practice, based at Yarnspinners Health Centre and led by Dr A.U.R. Khan.

Dr Naylea Choudry (30) hails from Blackburn and studied medicine in London. After she qualified, she returned to her roots and worked for a year at the Reedyford Surgery at Yarnspinners before being invited to join the Whitefield team.

Dr Nazneen Begum has even closer connections. The 29-year-old's family was living in Nelson when she was born at the Edith Watson Maternity Unit.

She studied at Walton High School – now Pendle Vale College – and Nelson and Colne College. She graduated in medicine in Birmingham, completed her training in Yorkshire and then also joined the Reedyford team before moving to Whitefield Health Care.

Dr Begum said: "Being born and bred here means we are in a good position to help patients. When I grew up in this community, there were no local young GPs as a role model. And everybody likes a fresh face. You can really add something to the community."

Dr Choudry added: "The fact we are female helps a lot as well. We are finding a good level of dealing with female problems. People do tend to take notice of what you advise."

Both are working mums, each with a young daughter, and Dr Choudry said: "It gives you empathy for new mums."

The two GPS highlighted that Dr Khan is determined to widen the services offered by Whitefield Health Care. Dr Begum said: "A trainee GP will be joining us shortly. There are extra things we aim to do, like a diabetes clinic. Lots of good things are happening in this practice. Dr Khan wants to make it more advanced."

They hope it will also mean more patients.

Both the young doctors have had interesting hobbies in the past. Dr Choudry enjoyed salsa dancing and Dr Begum played football for a GP team. Now they have less time for their hobbies, although Dr Choudry enjoys gardening.
