Police and fire-fighters under firework attack
FIRE crews in Pendle had one of their busiest ever extended weekends dealing with firework and bonfire incidents.
One fire-fighter was hit by a heavy but "dead" firework thrown by a youth, while a patrol accompanying the police had fireworks fired towards it.
In tomorrow's Nelson Leader we've got a special report from Peter Dewhurst who went out with the emergency services on one of their busiest nights of the year.
From reports of children throwing fireworks under cars in Brierfield to an illegal bonfire at Ringstone Crescent, Nelson, and a police chase, the patrol had a busy night.
Across East Lancashire over the weekend, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service dealt with hundreds of calls. Station Manager Clough said: "The weather had an impact. The fact it was warm and dry made it a busy few days. But we had no reports of anyone being seriously injured.
"There were several incidents in Pendle where fireworks were used illegally."
When a Nelson crew were called to Lomeshaye Road on Saturday to deal with a blazing wheelie bin, a fire-fighter was hit by a burned-out but chunky firework mortar tube thrown by a young offender.
Across Lancashire, there were more than 500 calls and Pendle suffered dozens of fire and rescue incidents over the long weekend, with Nelson attending 22 calls on Bonfire Night alone.
Mr Clough said: "It has never been as busy in the run-up to Bonfire Night. Wheelie bins are rapidly becoming bonfires on wheels in this area."
