Police in major swoop on metal thieves

POLICE have been working with VOSA, Customs and Excise and the Environment Agency to combat metal theft and illicit metal trading throughout Pendle.

The operation, named "Ferrous", is working with scrap metal dealers in gathering intelligence, identifying and eliminating disposal locations, disrupting activities relating to the theft and disposal of metals and the detection of crime.

As part of the operation, a number of check sites and inspections have taken place on main routes in and out of Pendle today.

The ANPR systems has been targeting flat back vehicles and vans suspected of being involved in unlawful activity, with officers using new UV lights on suspect vehicles to check for the presence of SMARTWATER on any metals.

Insp. Ian Cooper from Colne Police said: "Metal theft is an increasing problem nationally and has been well publicised. Today's operation is part of an ongoing plan whereby anyone involved in the theft of metal in Pendle will find themselves heavily targeted by police and our partners. Anyone carrying scrap metal round here will find themselves being stopped, asked to account for their load and they will be required to produce a waste carriers licence".

He added: "Failure to produce a valid licence can lead to the Environment Agency fining them 300. And, of course, if we suspect the metal is stolen they will be arrested."
