Town to mark naval victory!
200th anniversary of heroic namesake's death. PLANS for Trafalgar Day celebrations in Nelson are coming together nicely – and it looks like being a really exciting event.
Nelson, of course, takes its name from the hero of Trafalgar, Admiral Lord Nelson, so although it is a long way from the sea, it is fitting that one of Britain's greatest naval victories should be celebrated here.
The 200th anniversary celebration will take place on October 22nd, starting off in Nelson town centre from 2 p.m. There will be musicians ranging from a samba band to Accrington Pipe Band.
Other entertainment will include displays by Wheels within Wheel, which is planning to demonstrate everything from go-peds to BMX and skateboard skills. There will also be a human statue in the form of Lord Nelson, and Burnley Sea Cadets will be doing the Sailor's Hornpipe.
Coun. Donna Caley, who is chairing the organising committee, said: "We want more people to get involved, and anyone who is interest can ring me.
"There will be a torchlight procession with electric lanterns, involving local schools and youth groups. Community artists will be working with people to create lanterns.
"There will be competitions for children to take part in. The procession will make its way down Pendle Street, through the subway under the motorway and on to Nelson Cricket Ground.
"Local groups will be creating illuminated sculptures to carry down, and we hope people will dress up in fancy dress with a naval theme." Bradley Young Adults are already planning to create a sea dragon statue. Coun. Caley added: "It will end with a massive firework display at Seedhill cricket ground, with music to match the mood of the event - from things like 'Titanic', 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Land of Hope and Glory'.
"Then there will be two battleships, representing the two sides, which will simulate the Battle of Trafalgar." She added that representatives of Pendle's twin town in France – Creil – were being invited. She said: "We want to make it as exciting an event as possible and anyone who wants to get involved can contact me on 695988 or my mobile, 07901 798963, or our secretary, Saba Iftikhar, on 07773 976419."
Coun. Caley said: "We are still in the early stages, but everything is beginning to come together."
