Trafalgar Day celebrations
NELSON will honour its hero and namesake, the Admiral Lord Nelson, tomorrow in a big day of fun.
Local firms are doing their bit to help make the town's Trafalgar Day celebration a success by donating competition prizes.
Oddie's Bakery has iced a special Trafalgar Day cake which will be up for grabs for one lucky winner in the event's competition.
3B Systems of Nelson have donated a digital camera. Local people will also have the chance to win a video recorder donated by Hartley's Electrical, and many other prizes contributed by Nelson companies.
Georgina Lamb, Assistant Regeneration Officer, said: "The response from local companies has been fantastic - the business community has really grasped the opportunity to support the event by donating prizes and we would like to thank them all for their generosity."
The competition is open to anyone who comes along to celebrate Trafalgar Day in Nelson tomorrow from 2 p.m.
Details of the prizes and an entry form can be found inside the official Trafalgar Day booklet, available on the day in Nelson town centre.
There will also be plenty of entertainment throughout the day, including the Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Sea Cadets, who will be continuing the naval theme by performing their drill and a semaphore display.
Liz Jubb, commanding officer of the Sea Cadets, said: "The cadets have spent time learning their displays and are looking forward to demonstrating them for members of the public in their uniforms, and are proud to be taking part in the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar."
The Sea Cadets will perform in Nelson town centre at 2.45 p.m., in a programme of activities for all the family.
They will also lead a wreath laying ceremony at Nelson cenotaph at 5.30 p.m.
Other activities at the celebrations include street entertainers the Fairly Famous Duo, Bright Fusion Samba Band and the Accrington Pipe Band.
In addition to the live acts, there will also be some children's fairground rides, a candyfloss stall and a roast chestnut stall.
Throughout the day, children will have the chance to work with community artists to make flags and lanterns to use in the night time procession to Seedhill athletics track, ready for the fireworks display at 7 p.m.
Coun. Donna Caley, who has been leading the committee to organise the Trafalgar Day event, said: "The event is only a matter of a day away now and we are all looking forward to it immensely, especially those of us who will be celebrating the period by dressing up in costumes from the 1800s!
"It's going to be a fun day for all the family. There will be lots going on in the town centre from the early afternoon – a pipe band and a samba band, street entertainers, and sea cadet displays.
"The kids can work with community artists to make lanterns they can use in the night time procession to Seedhill athletics track, ready for our fantastic firework display at 7 p.m."
