Apprentice Laura scoops top award

A Burnley apprentice and a specialist engineering firm have been honoured at an annual awards ceremony.

Aircelle apprentice Laura Durkin (27) was among a number of high flying students from across Lancashire to be presented with an accolade at Blackburn College’s Apprenticeship and Employer Awards.

Burnley based BCW Engineering, which specialises in automotive and aerospace manufacturing, took home the award for Small/Medium Business of the Year at the awards ceremony.

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Level 5 student Laura won the Higher Apprentice of the Year award for her work at Aircelle.

Laura, who has worked at Aircelle for the past five years, was praised for her academic excellence and professional competence that she has displayed.

She said: “I am delighted to have won the award. I’ve really enjoyed the apprenticeship, particularly the experience it has given me in the work place and the theory to back it up.

“Aircelle has been very supportive of the apprenticeship giving me an afternoon release to attend college as well.”

Kathryn Starr, HR business partner at Aircelle, said: “We are very proud of Laura and her achievements, her successes are down to her dedication and hard work.

“Completing a Higher Apprenticeship has assisted Laura in moving to a new role at Aircelle and will support her future career development.”

BCW Engineering was praised by Blackburn College for embracing apprenticeships in all areas of the business, including Accountancy, IT and Human Resources.
