Charity wins in man versus food

The challenge, held at the Cross Gaits pub in Blacko, saw competitors pit their stomachs against burger and chips, to raise money for Pendleside Hospice.

And Adam Schofield, a director of Burnley-based Clearly Interiors which sponsored the event, cleaned his plate in 40 minutes to come out on top.

As well as the main (course) event, local singer Billy D performed live, while a charity auction and a raffle helped to raise a superb £6,500 for the hospice.

Paul Capstick, director of Clearly Interiors, who organised the event alongside Cross Gaits’ publican, Andrew Duxbury, said: “We have had some amazing support not only from local business but from people who have donated prizes personally and I would like to thank them all for their generosity.”

Contestants were allowed 40 minutes to finish the mammoth meal, with the fastest to finish the gargantuan guzzle-fest named the winner.

Pendleside Hospice fund-raising manager, Kaye Bartle, added: “We would like to thank the organisers, sponsors and all the contenders. The money raised on the day will be helping people living and working in our community who need our help and support following the devastating diagnosis of a life-limiting illness.”

As well as the belly-busting challenge, alternative food was available courtesy of Class 1, Wheel and Butchers and Hargreaves Bakery, from which proceeds were also donated.
