Clarets cheerleaders through to European championships

The Clarets Cheerleaders have got a European call-up as the club continues to cheer their way to the top.

Led by Sophie Boyle, 55 cheerleaders and 16 teams will be competing at the European Championships in Slovenia in July. They were chosen to represent the United Kingdom after a national competition in March.

“This will be tough and and we are doing lots of fundraising to support the trip but we are pleading with local businesses and people to get behind our amazing kids and teams,” said Sophie, whose club includes more than 100 cheerleaders, ranging from ages four to 50. “If anyone can help with sponsorship or fundraising please contact me on 07805 398720.”

The club has recently been nominated for the Community Club of the Year at the Burnley Sports Awards in July and Sophie recently picked up a ‘Coach of the Year Award’.

She took a number of teams including Teenies (aged six-nine), Junior A (aged 10-12), Junior B (aged 13-16), Seniors (aged 16+) and Masters to the United Kingdom Cheerleading Association Spring Championships.

“On the day we had nine routines and we came away with seven first places, one second spot and one third place. It was the first time competing for our Teenies cheerleaders and to celebrate first place out of nine teams was a huge achievement.

“On the day we also got presented with the ‘Club Development Award’ and I got the ‘Coach of the Year’ award, presented by the UKCA. This topped the day off.”
