The 17-year-old from Nelson won the former Culture Club star‘s vote after an emotional performance of Sinead O’Connor’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ against fellow contestant Heather Cameron Hayes.

“It was exactly what I thought it would be and more,” said Boy George before he had to choose one of his singers to progress to the next round. And, giving his backing to former Blessed Trinity pupil Cody, he said: “I fought to hard to get you and you remind me of me at that age.”

The duet, the last pairing of the contest’s Battles stage to be shown this evening, was described as “haunting” by Paloma Faith and earned a standing ovation from the judges.

Judge Will-i-am picked out Cody’s parents in the audience ,telling them “you guys did an awesome job designing that!”

Boy George told viewers he had decided to pair the teenagers against each other as they represented “different ends of the spectrum”. Cody told how she had left school after a year of studying for A-Levels, gaining U grades in her exams, while Heather is a member of MENSA. “I feel like I’m a bad influence,” Cody said, however, Boy George described her as a “mini me” and added: “I understand her completely.”

He went on: “There’s massive potential and something quirky about her.”
