Drink-driver had no licence or insurance

Burnley Magistrates’ Court was told how Jake Marren (21) was stopped in Hill Place, Nelson, about 1-25am.

He claimed he had a provisional licence, but the police system showed it had expired. He blew 48 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35.

Marren, of Briercliffe Road, Burnley, admitted driving with excess alcohol, no insurance or licence, on July 3rd.

The defendant was fined £400 and was also banned for 15 months.

Nick Dearing, in mitigation, told the court: “He would hope to get a licence at some point in the future.

“He can do nothing but apologise for his behaviour.”

District Judge Alexandra Simmonds told Marren it was fortunate there were no serious consequences “You had no right to be driving,” she said. “You didn’t have a licence and you weren’t insured.

“If there had been an accident there would have been serious consequences.”

She added: “You are only 21. You are getting quite a record built up now.

“In March this year you ended up going to prison.”
