Fire-fighters ready for 40-hour Leeds/Liverpool Canal paddle challenge

Two serving fire-fighters are to kayak the length of the Leeds/Liverpool Canal in aid of Pendleside Hospice and the Fire Fighter's Charity.

East Lancastrians Phil Jones and Simon Fryer will embark on their 128-mile journey in the very early hours of 29 June, and are aiming to complete the imposing 40-hour paddle over two days and raise £2,000.

Both men completed the Burnley 10km in full fire and kit and breathing apparatus for charity, while Simon has himself previously kayaked the Leeds/Liverpool Canal - an endeavor that took him three days last year.

“Blisters and dehydration are our biggest concerns,” explained Phil. “We expect to finish the challenge with our hands in tatters!”

A 4am start in Leeds awaits the to intrepid fundraisers, who are aiming to reach Liverpool before it goes dark on the 30 of June.

They have completed a marathon-length 26.2-mile paddle, which took them just under six hours, as a gauge for how long the journey will take.

The two men are planning to paddle the equivalent of three marathons - almost 78 miles - on the first day of their trip, with the remaining 50 miles completed on the second day.
