Burnley magistrates heard how Irslaan Nowkhaiz (21) had attracted the attention of officers as he was travelling at speed in his Renault Clio in Scotland Road, at about 1am.

Police caught up with him, but the defendant was going so fast he almost lost control and hit a pedestrian island in Pendle Street.

Prosecutor Andrew Robinson said: “The officers activated their lights and sirens but he didn’t stop. He went the wrong way down a one way street and then through three red lights. He turned into Macleod Street and mounted the kerb between a house and a parked car. He had no insurance and no licence.”

Nowkhaiz, of Macleod Street, Nelson, admitted dangerous driving in Pendle Street, Scotland Road, Manchester Road and Macleod Street and failing to stop for a constable, no insurance and no licence, in Pendle Street, on August 5th.

He has been unconditionally bailed until October 3rd when he will appear at Burnley Crown Court for sentence. The bench said its powers of punishment were not sufficient.
