A man had to be rescued from the embankment of Pendle Water in Gisburn Road, Barrowford, in the early hours of Sunday.
Emergency services were called to the bridge across the road from the Old Bridge Inn shortly after 1am by friends of the man who reported he had fallen into the river.
Paramedics initially attempted to get the man back to the road but needed the assistance of the fire and rescue service, who needed specialist lighting equipment and ropes in order to effect the rescue.e man
He was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital suffering from head and spinal injuries and is not thought to have been seriously hurt.
There were unconfirmed reports this week that the man had been involved in a fight outside the pub before his fall.
Police said the man did not want to help them further with their inquiries.
Seven years ago, Newchurch teenager Chloe Holgate was left paralysed after falling on to the dry river bed from the same bridge.
