New Burnley High School taking shape

Pupils were given a lesson in building techniques when they visited the site of their new home.

Pupils swapped their uniforms for hard hats and high visibility jackets as they were taken on a tour of the under-construction Burnley High School.

The new school – due to open at Easter next year – is being built on the site of the now demolished Habergham High School by Eric Wright Construction.

The firm has been awarded a multi-million pound design and build project to construct the two-form entry high school and sixth form at the site off Byron Street.

When completed the school will provide accommodation for 450 secondary and 200 sixth form students.

During the building project regular site visits will be made by staff and pupils based at their temporary home at the nearby Parkhill business centre.

And on the first members of the school’s media club were given an insight into the work by site manager, Mark Prince.

He told the pupils: “We are now constructing the steel shell of the building and then the walls and cladding will go up.

“We shall also be doing a lot of landscaping at the site.”

Mr Prince said about 20 workers were now involved in the school construction which would rise to 80 when the interior finishing is underway.

Pupil Leighton Burgoyne said: “I really enjoyed the visit. It is very exciting to be allowed on the site to see the works up close.”

Headteacher Vicky Povey said staff and pupils were looking forward to the move as the school goes from strength to strength.

She added: “We have had over 270 applications for the 90 places we have available in September. The future is looking very good for Burnley High School.”
