Padiham steps back to the 1940s

Padiham will be transported back to the 1940s this weekend with the promise of a Spitfire flypast being the highlight of Padiham on Parade.

The Padiham on Parade event kicks off tomorrow when Padiham Football Club will host the Churchill Stage featuring live music from the 40s to the noughties.

On Saturday, vintage vehicles will parade through the town, as will anyone wishing to come dressed for the occasion, while cafes and pubs put on their own themed events.

Raynor Pepper, one of the organisers, said: “On Saturday evening we will be hosting a ‘ballroom blitz’ dinner dance at Shuttleworth College which features a live band and the vocals of Sarah Dennis.

“On Sunday there will be a wreath-laying ceremony in Memorial Park followed by a parade down to the town hall for a service of remembrance at 11am. We will be joined by Lord and Lady Shuttleworth for this.

“Also on the Sunday there will be a farmers’ and crafts market.

“There is a live band between 2-4pm in Memorial Park and at around 2pm we have a Spitfire flypast courtesy of the RAF.

“We are also giving away a prize for the best dressed shop and house.

There will also be a 1940s fire engine on didplay at Padiham fire station and fire-fighters will be giving a series of demonstrations.

St Leonard’s Church is open on Saturday from 10 am for a Naafi cafe and then at 4pm Home Front, is a multi media story about the war through the eyes of a girls and her boyfriend who is away at the front, will be shown.
