The 1830 watercolour depicting the ruins of an ancient Greek temple will be one of over 100 Turner works on display until September 18th.

Ken Darwen, Towneley Hall manager, said: “We are delighted to have this extraordinary painting go on display in France.

“JMW Turner was an incredibly influential artist, and this exhibition will give visitors a fascinating insight into his work, and his distinctive, sometimes eccentric use of vibrant colour that was central to his success as an artist.”

Organised in partnership with the Turner Contemporary in Margate, Kent, this is the first exhibition ever to examine the topic in relation to Turner, exploring the life and work of this great artist from a new perspective.

It retraces the subtle evolution in the painter’s palette down through the years and through his exploration and experimentation with colour.

A significant section of the exhibition will be devoted to artist’s travels through Europe giving visitors the opportunity to admire the variety of golden sunsets, the marine blue and dazzling landscapes which are typical of Turner’s work.

France is the first stop of the Turner masterpiece tour. From there the exhibition will head to the UK where it will be featured at the Turner Contemporary in Margate between October 8th 2016 and January 8th 2017.
