A high street banking giant has revealed plans to close its branch in Nelson town centre.
Bosses at HSBC said the bank would be closing in the next two months after more customers turned to online banking.
The Nelson bank is one of three in East Lancashire, along with Rawtenstall and Accrington, facing the axe, and looks set to close its doors for the final time on April 29th. HSBC said the decision was taken because the branches were under-used. Nelson customers will have to travel to Burnley to use the branch in Manchester Road. An HSBC spokesman said: “We never take the decision to close a branch lightly, and we understand it’s unsettling for the local community. We’ve taken this difficult decision as 81% of contact with the bank is now completed via the telephone, internet or smartphone, plus 97% of cash withdrawals are made via ATM.”
