The celebrations to mark 40 years since the borough of Pendle was created were brought to an end on Friday when the giant shuttle in Nelson town centre was turned into a birthday candle.

And there was another reason to celebrate as a book entitled 40@40 was launched at Nelson Library.

Pendle sculptor Philippe Handford collaborated with Paul Hartley of In-Situ Arts to create the ambitious installations and the unique souvenir book.

The book features photographs of people from the area who were born in 1974.

And Nelson Library, which, like the borough of Pendle, turns 40 this year, displayed an unusual Christmas tree, hung with significant objects from different eras over 40 years.

The project was supported by Arts Council England, Mary Portas funding for Nelson, Pendle Council and Nelson Library.

• Copies of the 40@40 books are available for sale to anyone who wants one. They cost £12.50 and are available via the 40@40 Facebook page.
