Two Pendle Council recycling crews have apprehended two burglars in Colne.

Around 10am on Thursday, a cardboard collection crew spotted a man and a woman acting suspiciously carrying two full bags in a back street off Glen Street.

They approached the couple, who dumped the bags and tried to run away.

But at that moment, the council’s brown bin collection wagon drove into the back street from the other end.

The crews worked together to apprehend the burglars and called the Police.

Coun. John David, Executive Member for Environmental Services, praised the crews’ bravery and quick thinking.

He said: “They did the right thing at a time when a quick judgement was needed.

“I expect they’re now feeling proud of themselves – and quite right too!”

David Walker, Waste Services Manager, said: “By all accounts it was like something out of Police, Camera, Action! and happened really fast.

“The teams instinctively knew something wasn’t right and wanted to apprehend the offenders rather than turn a blind eye.

“To quote one of my staff, they simply said they wouldn’t have liked to have come home and found they had been broken into and their possessions had gone.

“We are very proud that we have staff who feel this way and do the right thing.”

The couple were taken away for questioning by the police. The council crews are also helping the police by giving statements.
