Market Street, Colne, 50 years ago
A PICTURE from exactly 50 years ago this week with an excellent view of Market Street, Colne, as it was back in 1959.
Looking towards Skipton Road on the left, the Savoy cinema is just visible, followed by the Union Hotel, then L. Threlfall and Son, wine and spirit merchants and, across Cumberland Street, set back just off camera, is the now-demolished, imposing Primitive Methodist Chapel of 1880.
Across Skipton Road, the long-standing Commercial Hotel can be seen and just behind, is the now lost tower of the Trinity Baptist Chapel from 1883.
On the right of our photo, first to be seen is the well-known ladies' dress and accessory shop, "Valerie Jane".
Then to an interesting row of fine, long-established shops which ran from St John Street to Railway Street. Firstly, a most excellent boot and shoe emporium, H.P. Tyler Ltd., followed by Lizzie Shuttleworth's grocery and sweet shop. Next in line is the legendary tripe-dressers, which was run by the amicable Harold Worswick and his wife, and then next along is one of Colne's best known shops of all time, Miss Vipond's shoe shop, which was run for many years by the refined Miss Elizabeth Vipond. Afterwards, the master butcher's, Allan Gawthorp, followed by Smith and Wild's, wholesale grocers and provision dealers.
At the year of our photo, the end was nigh for these fine local shops known to all Colners, for from 1959 to 1963, all the South side of Market Street was demolished, with the sad loss of 47 shops which had been trading for many decades.
