LETTER: Western excess leads to Third World poverty

YOU don’t have to travel through South America, nor sub-Sahara Africa, nor apparently the countries of Asia to witness the abject poverty of billions trying to eke out an existence by scratching at the dusty earth around them.

These appalling scenes appear in the news items and documentaries of our television programmes, if we watch them.

All the profligacy of our “western countries” is at the expense of these people living in abject conditions.

In spite of our colossal debts we have lived well, and we want to continue our profligate lifestyle into old age, with pensions we can no longer afford.

ROBIN PARKER,

St Chad’s Avenue,

Chatburn
