A PHYSIOTHERAPIST at Pendle Community Hospital, Nelson, is putting her own muscles to good use in aid of charity.
Miss Helen Thompson (23), of Vandyck Avenue, Burnley, will take part in the London Marathon on Sunday, April 17th, to raise money for the Spinal Injuries Association.
It is through her work at the hospital, which has involved helping those recovering from spinal cord injuries, that gave the idea to undertake the run.
And despite her gruelling training schedule, she knows crossing that finishing line will be well worth it.
“Training four days a week has been quite difficult, especially alongside a full-time job. I did two half marathons in September, and carried on my training from there. It’s been more difficult over Christmas because of the weather, but since January, I’ve upped my training further.
“As a student I did a lot of work with people who suffered from spinal injuries and it had a real effect on me. It can happen to anyone and can change the rest of their lives.”
With a fund-raising target of £1,800, the former St Hilda’s High School pupil is now looking for as much support as possible.
“I’ve currently got around £800, but I want to raise as much as I possibly can. It doesn’t matter how small or big an amount, it all helps, and would be greatly appreciated.”
