A young driver who led police on a high speed, night-time chase partly through a residential area of Burnley, walked free from court.

Brandon Dugdale (20) went 50mph over the speed limit in a protracted attempt to get away from officers, during which the police helicopter was scrambled.

He failed to comply with traffic signals and ignored Give Way markings, when he had no view of oncoming traffic, the town’s crown court was told.

He had no licence, was not insured to drive his friend’s Hyundai Coupe and was said to have “panicked.” The incident was caught on CCTV on the dashboard of the pursuing officer.

The defendant, who had no previous convictions, was spared immediate custody.

Dugdale, of Lyndhurst Road, admitted driving dangerously on Leyland Road, Yorkshire Street, Harry Potts Way and Brunshaw Avenue with no insurance, no licence and failing to stop on Ormerod Road, in September.

He was given four months in a young offenders’ institution, suspended for 12 months, with 120 hours unpaid work, banned for a year, must take an extended driving test and ordered to pay £245 costs.
