residents opposed to one of the biggest housing developments proposed in Colne in years have begun their fight to halt the plan - a decade since they fought and won a similar battle.
Around 60 people living in the Knotts Drive, Knotts Mount and Burnley Road area of town attended a meeting at the Crown Hotel.
And they used the meeting to launch the campaign against the plans submitted by Persimmon Homes to build 212 houses on the former railway sidings and adjacent lands stretching towards Primet High School.
A similar application 10 years ago was turned down by Pendle Council.
And, after a Government inspector overturned that council decision, it was subsequently upheld by the then Secretary of State for the Environment, John Prescott.
Persimmon’s latest application is expected to go before the council’s Colne and District Committee on Thursday, November 8th.
Ward councillor Tony Greaves explained the planning process to those present and told them what were and what were not legitimate grounds for objecting to the plans.
The closing date for objections is Wednesday, October 3rd.
A number of those at the meeting said the land was a habitat for a number of distinctive species.
They also questioned the need to develop a green field site when there were brown field sites in the Waterside area which could be developed instead.
Other objections included:
The fact that there are a large number of empty homes in the area.
Concerns over the provision of schools, doctors and dentists.
Lack of leisure facilities in the area.
The time scale of the development should permission be granted - figures of between seven and 15 years for the building of the houses were mentioned at the meeting.
Coun. Greaves said it was hoped to arrange a meeting between councillors and Persimmon Homes before the committee meeting in November.
