CAMPAIGNERS have officially launched a petition to save the sauna at the Pendle Leisure Centre in Colne.
The team, which includes Martin Baldwin (57), Gerald Hollos (66) and Manzar Iqbal (46), are hopeful they can gather enough signatures to keep the facility, in Crown Way, Colne, open.
It was axed at the last Pendle Council budget meeting, by every political party. But users vowed they would fight to keep it open.
Mr Iqbal said that the lobby group is aiming to get at least 100 signatures, which can then be presented to councillors at upcoming committee meetings. He has already gathered over 50 by himself.
He said: “The petition has had a fantastic response so far.
“We have a massive interest from people who don’t just use the facility, but who don’t use the facility as well — on ethical and moral grounds.
“It is not guaranteed that it will stay open, but all we can do is fight for what we believe in.”
This is the second time that the sauna has been threatened with closure.
It was previously saved after residents, with the help of Coun. Ann Kerrigan, managed to source an affordable quote for repair works.
This time round, news of its closure has sparked mixed reactions from councillors. By closing the sauna suite, Pendle Council will make a saving of £7,500 per year.
