A shoplifter who stole a jacket from JD Sports was caught when the manager saw him walking through Burnley wearing it - with the security tag still attached, a court heard.

Zaffar Hussain (44) was carrying a bag from the store. He became aware of the tag, ripped it off and ran off through the town centre as she watched him.

Burnley magistrates were told Hussain was chased, detained and the £79.99 jacket was recovered. Hussain, of Castle Street, Nelson, admitted theft on July 4th. He was fined £60, with £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Mr John Rusius (defending), said Hussain had gone in the shop, looking to try on a jacket. He got a phone call, went outside, somebody started shouting at him and he ran off. He was told to stop, came back and admitted he had gone outside with the jacket on.

Mr Rusius added: “He was short of money at the time. There had been a problem with his benefits.”
