The new manager of Nelson’s main shopping centre has said a privacy problem in the building’s public toilets has been resolved.

Debbie Hernon, who has just taken over the position of manager at Pendle Rise Shopping Centre, vowed to sort out a problem of peepholes in the partition wall which separates the cubicles in the men’s toilets. This has now been done.

Leader Times Newspapers has been contacted by concerned shopping centre users that the holes in the wall could lead to potential spying and voyeurism.

It is not clear whether the holes were created with the purpose of being peepholes or if it is just plain vandalism, but according to one reader and regular shopping centre user, Leon Crompton, the problem has been apparent for two years.

He said: “The male toilets in Nelson Arndale Centre (Pendle Rise) have been a disgrace for the last two years, nothing has been done about this problem.

“There are toilets to sit down on separated by one panel wall.

“There are lots of holes in the partition wall allowing people to view into the next cubicle spying, and who knows, maybe recording people’s body parts.

“People’s dignity and privacy are being violated.”

Debbie Hernon, Pendle Rise Centre Manager, said: “I am the new manager at Pendle Rise and have been in post for a few weeks.

“This issue has been brought to my attention and has now been dealt with.

“I can assure you that this behaviour is not acceptable in our family friendly shopping centre.”
