Barnoldswick pigeons to go on 'the pill' to reduce numbers
PIGEONS could soon be a thing of the past in Barnoldswick, with councillors suggesting using contraceptive measures to treat the birds.
Coun. David Whipp has been looking into an American product called "Oval Control P" to humanely treat the pigeon problem.
The drug would be put into the pigeons' bait during their reproductive season to decrease the hatchability of eggs.
The effect of the treatment would be fully reversible, however, and would also be controlled as to not harm other birds.
This contraceptive treatment would compliment other techniques used to manage the population of the birds, such as habitat modification and physical barriers.
