Holiday fashion disasters revealed

WITH thousands of holidaymakers from the North West jetting abroad this summer, a new survey on holiday fashion disasters has revealed socks and sandals as the worst look on the beaches of the Med, closely followed by tight small trunks on men and exposed beer bellies.

The survey questioned people across the region on their likes and dislikes of the wardrobes of British holidaymakers, with thongs on women, sunburn and "logo overload" also topping the list of fashion faux pas. A third of respondents also highlighted football tops on women as a big mistake, while one in seven believed football tops on men failed to hit a fashion h igh.

When asked which British people have the worst fashion sense one in six North West respondents said those from Birmingham and the Midlands; followed by Newcastle and the North East; London and the South East; Essex; Wales; and Scotland. Holidaymakers from Yorkshire and East England were seen to have the best fashion sense – followed by those from the North West.

The survey, run by DiscountVouchers.co.uk, also asked respondents which nationality they thought had the poorest fashion sense, with Americans topping the poll for their loud shirts and socks and sandals, closely followed by the Germans, then the Greeks and British. Italians were voted the best dressed, followed by the Spanish.

Over 75% of North West respondents believed men to have the worst fashion sense, despite men (63%) being more likely to buy new clothes each year for their holiday compared to women (46%). 38% of men and 55% of women said they wear clothes on holiday they have had for more than five years.

When asked about the main factors in their decision to buy new clothes for a holiday, two thirds said they bought an item if it looked good on; but for one in six the key factor is price. 12% of North West respondents said they spend less than 50 on their holiday wardrobe, while most (65%) spend between 50-200.

Simon Terry of DiscountVouchers.co.uk said: "Keeping costs down is important to everyone at the moment, and with respondents stating price is the second largest influencing factor in purchasing new clothes, it goes to show just how important it is to shop around. These days it is possible to get extra savings even at leading retailers, with sites like DiscountVouchers.co.uk helping travel lers get a new holiday wardrobe without breaking the bank."

The survey also asked about individual holiday fashion disasters, with responses including trunks/swimsuits that became transparent; Miami Vice style trousers; swimsuits that were too tight – and one like a mankini; peeling sunburn; and neon clothing.
