Workmen are still at the scene of a major water main burst on the Nelson-Colne boundary which has led to the closure of a key route between the towns.

United Utilities have been working on the repair of the pipe and road since Tuesday and traffic is being diverted away from the scene.

A United Utilities spokesman said: “Around 6am on Tuesday we had reports of a burst water pipe in Leeds Road (A56) in Nelson.

“Fortunately, we had no supply issues to homes and businesses in the area as this pipe is used to feed a local service reservoir. This service reservoir contained enough water to cope with the morning demand.”

They added: “The burst did cause significant damage to a section of Leeds Road, which will remain closed until at least Friday, May 1st. A fully signposted diversion route has been put in place.

“We’re very sorry for the impact this may have on commuters travelling around the area.”
