To mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, a new flag has appeared on top of Nelson Town Hall.

At the request of the Royal British Legion, Pendle Council officers have kindly agreed to fly the “Red Duster” - or the Merchant Navy Red Ensign - for the remainder of May leading up to the big celebrations to be held in Liverpool.

Mr Michael Sutcliff from Nelson and District Branch of the Royal British Legion said: “That flag flying from our Town Hall is a flag of great pride, but from a largely forgotten bunch of heroes, take a few seconds these next few days to remember them, the freedom we enjoy today was largely because of Merchant Navy efforts to keep us supplied at all costs”

And he said: “Nelson Royal British Legion would like to hear from anyone who served in the Merchant Navy in World War Two and Royal Navy veterans who were on convoy duties, or anyone who, for whatever reason, was on a WW2 convoy.”
