RUGBY league devotee Mr Pendle – no accounting for taste, is there? – is right in his claim that comparisons in sport are, and always have been, invidious.
He is right, too, in his assertions that there are inevitably widely diverse opinions when it comes to “the best of this” or “the best of that”.
But Mr Pendle’s specific quotation – the greatest Flat racehorse of all time – is something totally different to the norm. The world’s top jockeys, the leading thoroughbred trainers and Sport of Kings commentators with over half a century of experience all speak with a united voice. No comparison, mainly because this particular horse is incomparable. The champion? The wonder horse? It’s the Sir Henry Cecil-trained Frankel. No doubt at all.
