LETTER: Parish and town councils should not be political

I APPLAUD you for printing all the candidates for the forthcoming local elections, particularly those seeking election to a Parish or Town Council.

However, as someone who served as a town councillor for many years, I am very surprised and disappointed some candidates are standing under a political banner.

One of the premier items of the constitution of the organisation is that IT IS NON-POLITICAL. Without telling people who to vote for, perhaps people ought to consider that when casting their vote. I also think the Returning Officer should make this fact known to all potential candidates on future elections
