Golden cue finale set
THE stage is set for the first Moorhouse's Golden Cue final in almost two decades.
And with £600 up for grabs on the night, some great snooker is in prospect.
Ighten Leigh's Jonny O'Reilly will meet Colne's Joe Nolan. The date: Monday. The time: 7-30 p.m.The venue: Ighten Leigh.
O'Reilly qualified for the showdown in a pretty one-sided semi against Alexandra's James Waddington on Monday.
But the following night, Nolan had to wait until sinking the blue in the deciding frame to eventually beat Padiham's Gary Brelsford.
On Monday, Waddington won the toss and opted for small table first.
O'Reilly took an early lead and finished with a 72 clearance to earn an extra £50 for then highest break of the tournament – an extra £1 per point will be awarded for the highest break in the final itself.
On the big table, O'Reilly was in charge from the start, making a 32-break and closing out the frame comfortably.
On the third frame on small table, O'Reilly was in first again with 33-break to go 49 in front, but Waddington hit back with a 49-break, only to lose out as O'Reilly ran out with 26.
The following night, again a match played on both table sizes, the balance of power shifted throughout.
Nolan, a large table entrant, had a 36-break in comfortably winning the first frame on the small table.
But he was never in the second frame as Brelsford levelled.
Nolan had a run of 38 when returning to the small table to restore his one-frame advantage.
Then Brelsford had a 36-break of his own on the large table to again draw level.
Brelsford, a small table entrant, won the toss to decide which table the decider would be played on.
He opted for the large table, and when he missed a black early on and spilt the reds all over the table, he looked doomed.
But Nolan missed, and with the balls split badly and the colours safe, a nip-and-tuck frame followed, until Nolan had a run of 20 and missed the black off its spot to leave Brelsford needing snookers.
More cagey play followed, but when Nolan took the blue, there was nowhere for Brelsford to lay a snooker as the black hung over a corner pocket, and the game was over.
Doors will open at Ighten Leigh at 6-30 p.m. on Monday, with the action due to start at 7-30 p.m. over the best of seven frames on the large table.
