Pendle crowned champions
PENDLE Phoenix rounded off their title-winnning season with a 24th win from 26 games, beating Blackburn in an eight-try display.
The club have won promotion to the Miller Homes Third Division North after scoring over 800 points and conceding just 175.
Pendle soaked up the first 10 minutes of pressure before they scored their first try.
Danny Rowland stole the ball at a scrum and fed Liam Canning, who drove hard into the Blackburn defence, and when the ball was recycled, quick handling saw Ben Peverley crash over to open the scoring, with James Redford converting.
Blackburn hit back with a well-worked try, but the conversion was missed.
Pendle turned up the heat, and a stolen ball at a line-out saw the ball pass through 10 pairs of hands before Redford scored under the posts, and converted his own try.
The Hodge House side now settled into the power game.
Strong forward domination at the scrum allowed a well-rehearsed move to carve open the Blackburn defence and some slick handling and accurate passing put Peverley in for his second.
The second half saw Pendle with the wind behind them, and, rather than play a kick and chase game, they opted to play fast, expansive, open running rugby.
A catch and drive move from a line-out sucked in the opposition defence, and Sonny Waddington latched on to a ball at pace to carve open Blackburn and score a well-taken try. Redford did the honours with the conversion as the score mounted.
Pendle continued to attack Blackburn and turned over a ball at a ruck, and quick handling from Hempstead, McGladdery and Taylor allowed Redford to out-pace the opposition and score in the corner.
Pendle now have a well-earned month's rest period, before the commencement of the summer training campaign.
