Semi-final line-up taking shape
THE semi-final line-up for the 2008 Moorhouse's Golden Cue is almost complete.
Padiham WMC's Gary Brelsford, Ighten Leigh's Jonny O'Riley and Joe Nolan (Colne) have already reached the last four.
And last night James Waddington (Alexandra) was due to meet Nikki Murtaugh (Lowerhouse).
And when those games have been played, the stage will be set for the Grand Final on Monday, April 28th.
The quarter-final action started on Monday at the Ighten Leigh Social Club.
Brelsford had runs in excess of 40 as he took the opening two frames.
But Peter Roach (Alexandra) hit back with a run of 56 to take the third frame and extend the match, but he never got going in the fourth frame.
On Tuesday O'Riley was involved in the match of the competition against Colne Legion hopeful Tony Arnott.
The first two frames were cagey, with Arnott taking both on the pink
The third frame saw Arnott 30 in front, but he left a plant when playing safe and O'Riley got back in, finishing with a 25-clearance to steal the frame.
Frame four was again tight before O'Riley made a 22 clearance to take it to a decider.
In that frame the Ighten Leigh man was always in front.
Arnott needed a couple of snookers but left a red sticking out and O'Riley pounced.
Lee Taylor (Ighten Leigh) took the first frame of Wednesday's match, but Nolan did not go down without a fight.
Needing three snookers, he successfully got himself back in the frame, only to leave the blue over a pocket and allow Taylor to draw first blood.
The second frame was nip-and-tuck all the way, resulting in a respotted black which Nolan sank at the seventh attempt.
And from then on there was no going back for the Colne Snooker Club player.
In control throughout the third frame, Nolan had a 46-break to go in front for the first time.
And in the fourth frame he looked set to make the highest break of the competition, only to break down on 59 when an attempted red down the cush did not drop.
The semi-final draw was due to be made last night after the conclusion of the quarter-finals.
They are to be played on Monday and Tuesday at Ighten Leigh with action starting at 7-30 p.m.
