Sandygate boxer gets off to a flyer

SANDYGATE’S Joe ‘Silent’ Knight started his senior boxing career in style after beating Salford’s home favourite S. Kremner.

Knight, who recently hit the headlines outside of the squared circle when he and two fellow Sandygate boxers pulled a man free from his over-turned car, put in a top quality performance to grace the tabloids once more.

Knight’s ring craft was apparent straight from the opening bell against the heavier southpaw from Salford. Both boxers, who have glowing junior careers, showed they had not lost their touch after a two-year absence.

Kremner’s straight forward style suited Knight who countered with ease, scoring with a rigid right and left hook to the head, covering up well from Kremner’s attacks. In the second two-minute round Knight showed off his full armoury scoring with hooks and uppercuts, Kremner started loading up his shots looking for a stoppage but ‘Silent’ Knight ended the round with a roar and a big right which stopped Kramner in his tracks and made him then box on the back foot.

The third and final round was not to disappoint the fans and earned this encounter “Bout-of-the-Night”, Trawden’s Knight produced his best round keeping neat, tidy and busy. All three judges ringside gave a unanimous verdict to Knight with his hand raised by the man-in-the-middle at the final bell.

“Joe put in a class display, in his first bout as a Senior,” beamed coach Andy Howcroft. Nelson’s Charlie Martin (14) was not so lucky when he faced L.Hinkley (15), from Macclesfield, losing narrowly on a majority decision.

“The Macc lads wouldn’t have moaned if we got the nod, as it was that close,” said coach Nik Tucker.

Next up for the Burnley-based club is Colne’s Reece ‘Rocky’ Jackson (11), and the much anticipated debut of Colne’s Lloyd Baldwin (21).
