Clarets make move for pair

The Clarets have had an initial offer for Charlton Athletic keeper Nick Pope turned down, while they are reported to have offered €1.5m to Polish club Lech Poznan for Hungary international defender Tamas Kadar.

Pope, 24, made 28 appearances, keeping six clean sheets as he ended the season as first choice at The Valley, as the Addicks were relegated to League 1.

He was in goal against the Clarets on the final day of the season as Burnley sealed the Championship title with a 3-0 win.

Pope has attracted interest from a number of clubs, including Celtic, Crystal Palace, Hull, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, but Burnley have tested Charlton’s resolve with an undisclosed offer, which has been knocked back.

Charlton, under new boss Russell Slade, are eager to hold onto Pope, who has had loan spells with Cambridge United, York City and Aldershot, as well as helping Bury to promotion to League 1 last season.

The Addicks are believed to be prepared to allow a number of players to leave following relegation, including Ademola Lookman, who impressed against Burnley at The Valley, but they want Pope to help mount a bid for an immediate return to the Championship.

Burnley are on the lookout for a senior keeper as back up for Tom Heaton – currently in France with England for Euro 2016 – after releasing Matt Gilks, while Paul Robinson is also out of contract after his short term deal, though the former England man has been offered fresh terms.

The Clarets have also been linked with Southend United’s highly-rated Daniel Bentley, who is out of contract at Roots Hall, but, as he is only 22, would command a fee.

Meanwhile, reports in Hungary suggest the Clarets have bid in the region of £1.2m for Kadar, who is at Euro 2016 with the Magyars.

Kadar, 26, is a left-sided centre back or left back, who started his career with Zalaegerszeg in his home counttry before joining Newcastle United in 2008 as an 18-year-old.

There he made 13 appearances, and enjoyed a loan spell at Huddersfield Town – his two appearances for the Terriers both coming in the same side as Clarets midfielder Scott Arfield.

After being released by Newcastle, he joined Dutch Eredivisie club Roda JC, before returning to Hungary with Diósgyőr.

Kadar joined Lech Poznan in the Polish Ekstraklasa in January last year, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract.

He is expected to start at left back for Hungary at the Euros, as they look to progress from a group containing Austria, Iceland and Portugal.
