Two goals from Richie Allen and a second-successive clean sheet saw Nelson climb into the NWC First Division promotion places on Saturday.

The Blues brought in new signing Ed O’Neil for the suspended Ben Hoskin, and Peter Wright returned from injury in place of Brandon Barski.

In an explosive start, Irlam’s Jordan Smith was sent off in the second minute for a nasty challenge on Jake Lloyd.

This upset the early rhythm of both teams, though both sides had chances. Allen’s corner was met by Lydon Hodgkiss, but Jamie Brewer saved at the foot of the post, while Ben Woodhead saved at full stretch from Connor Martin.

However, two goals in four minutes around the half hour but the Admirals in command.

Wright crossed for Allen to open the scoring, before, from another Allen free kick, the ball was played short to O’Neill, and a quick interchange allowed Allen to advance and beat Brewer.

But Allen didn’t make it to half-time as he was sent-off for dangerous play.

In the second half, Barski, on for Michael Morrison, drew a fine finger-tip save from Brewer, while Robert Grimes shot wide, but the Blues’ first half advantage proved enough,
