Going for it!

BRIAN Laws believes his side's ability to score goals freely at Turf Moor could be the weapon to fire the Clarets to Premier League survival.

Nugent's equaliser in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Stoke City ensured the Clarets go into tomorrow's clash with Wolves as one of just three clubs in the top tier to score in every fixture at home.

Only Chelsea and Liverpool have been able to achieve that same feat during 2009/10 though Laws wants goals turning into points.

He said: "The one thing you want is goals, and we've consistently scored goals. It's nice to get Nugent another, he's in good form, and Paterson's been in good form.

"That should give them great belief. Having Fletcher out was disappointing, he's our leading goalscorer, but we've definitely got goals in us, we've just got to keep it tight at the back.

"The first goal in the second half had to be ours, and we started well and got that goal. It was a terrific header from Nugent from a great ball in by Paterson, and it set the tone.

"All of a sudden we were on the front foot and asking a lot of questions, and in the end I'm disappointed not to go on and win the game.

"But I was delighted with that response, and if we show the same commitment, drive and desire, I'm confident of getting a result against Wolves."

Both the Clarets and Wolves sit on 24 points going into tomorrow's crunch game though Mick McCarthy's side remain outside the relegation zone courtesy of a marginally better goal difference.

But, despite both teams fighting for their Premier League lives, Laws doesn't rank this game any higher than the remaining eight fixtures that will follow.

"Every game is a big game," he said. "Cup final, call it whatever you like. You can't get away from it or hide from it. There is a lot riding on it and the reward is that we jump out of the bottom three so it's a great incentive. It comes with its own pressures but the one thing the players have got to do is play with a freedom and put all the pressure on the opposition."

"Nobody's hiding, why should we have pressure on us? Every man and his dog expects Burnley to not be in the Premier League next year, but we do, we believe, and many teams have more pressure on them than us, they'll be feeling it more than us.

"We have another home game now, another bite of the cherry, and if the performance is like it was in the second half I'm confident. We don't feel the pressure; we have nothing to lose and everything to gain."

The weekend fixture list will see West Ham away at London rivals Chelsea, Bolton and Wigan go head-to-head at the Reebok and Hull at home to Arsenal; a weekend which could prove pivotel as to which division Burnley will be plying their trade in next season.

However, Laws insists the Clarets have to help themselves rather than relying on others. He said: "Not interested in those games at all. We're not relying on them, we're relying on ourselves. We don't have to rely on other results.

"We carry on regardless whatever happens. I'm not a pessimist I just look positively at it and whatever happens we will move on to the next game and we'll keep doing that until we have exhausted everything. Each time you gain a point it's a positive and when you get something out of it it's a positive. That's how we have got to remain in the season."

Laws added: "Mick McCarthy's teams are very effective, they work extremely hard. They've got pace in their side too, and they play football."
