COLNE progressed to the First Round Proper of the FA Vase with a confident performance at Holker on Tuesday night.
With manager Nigel Coates under the weather, his assistant Lol McMahon took charge of the team which in itself was depleted by suspensions.
The reshuffled side worked hard and improved throughout the game though to deserve the final result.
In the opening stages, Holker looked confident and Reds keeper Andy Moore made a vital tackle on speedy winger Gareth Smith when he broke through Colne’s defence.
After 12 minutes, Bradley Hubbold shot just wide of the Colne goal after a half clearance and five minutes later, Steve Kewley was inches short of reaching a far post cross in the Colne goalmouth.
As the Reds settled, they began to put passes together and create chances and Andy Tinker’s 30 yard shot after 23 minutes was just over the bar.
Four minutes later, a long ball up the right wing was taken in his stride by Bright Maduka who turned inside and dispatched a left foot shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the net to give Colne the lead.
The goal lifted the Reds and sparked a series of attacks with Maduka looking for a second goal.
But, on 42 minutes, the Reds’ defence was stretched and James Bonner broke clear on the right only to see his well driven low shot parried by Moore and cleared.
Colne swiftly counterattacked and Liam Goggin appeared to be pushed in the back in the home area as he headed the ball on to Jimmy Crorken but the referee played the advantage rule and Crorken’s first time shot flew high and wide.
In the second half, the Reds continued to create chances and should have doubled their lead when Dominic Craig laid the ball back for Maduka in the Holker goalmouth but Maduka sidefooted his shot over the bar.
And two minutes later, Maduka again shot over the bar from Neil Stansfield’s cross. But, after 58 minutes, it was Maduka on the left wing who released Crorken for a shot from a tight angle across goal which dipped into the far side of the net to double Colne’s lead.
After 66 minutes, Danny Boyle saw his well struck shot knocked away from under the bar by the Holker keeper with a spectacular save.
Craig’s speed on the right wing was too much for the home defence and his cross after 77 minutes was knocked home by Maduka but the goal was ruled out for hand ball. And in the final minute, Richard Cowan’s header across goal was just wide of the far post as Colne kept up the pressure to the end.
Colne now play Ramsbottom United away in the First Round Proper of the FA Vase on October 22nd.
