A late fightback proved in vain as Barnoldswick Town lost 3-2 at home to 1874 Northwich in the Men United Cup second round on Saturday.

Northwich raced into a 3-0 lead within 20 minutes, before two late goals had the visitors clinging on in a nervy finale.

The visitors opened the scoring in the third minute when Ryan Mitchell head home Daley Woods’ corner at the far post.

Lee Duckworth then curled a free kick into the top corner 15 minutes later.

Two minutes later, Duckworth swung in a corner from the right which Woods headed past Chris Taylor, with Taylor replaced by Chris Simpson after picking up a hand injury.

Barnoldswick regrouped and reorganised, and, with a home tie against Colne on offer, started to gain the upper hand. Joel Melia and Matt Cavangh both went close in the opening minutes of the second half, and it was no surprise when Town pulled a goal back in the 76th minute as a long ball allowed Melia to rob keeper Matt Conkie and roll the ball into the empty net.

Four minutes later Cavanagh made it 3-2, scoring from a corner as the visitors failed to clear.

Melia had a shot saved as he looked to snatch an equaliser, but Northwich held on.

Town are at AFC Liverpool on Saturday before hosting Squires Gate on Tuesday night.
