Nelson progressed to the second round of the NWC First Division Cup on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Daisy Hill, and their first clean sheet since the opening game of the season.

Manager Mark Fell rang the changes, bringing in new signing Lydon Hodgkiss, Jake Lloyd, Brandon Barski and Michael Morrison, resting Tom Murphy, Matt Whitwell and Chris Turner, with Peter Wright still injured.

Nelson started well, as Richie Allen had a chance blocked, before Sakeel Abdullah, against his former club, mis-hit an attempted lob.

Robert Grimes’ snap shot shaved the outside of the post, before Barski gace Nelson a deserved lead on 26 minutes with a powerful left-foot drive past home keeper Steven Whittle.

Grimes forced Whittle into a save, but Ben Hoskin doubled the Blues’ advantage with a well-struck shot.

Daisy Hill started the second half on the front foot, as conditions worsened.

But the Admirals sealed their passage through to the next round as stand-in skipper Grimes ran fully 40 yards, beating two players en-route, before comprehensively beating Whittle to make it 3-0.

The Blues are back in league action on Saturday when they travel to Irlam, kick-off 3 p.m.
