Charlie Austin continued his remarkable start to the season in September, adding another seven goals to the four he hit in August.

He wasn’t on target as Brighton earned a 3-1 win at Turf Moor - with Craig Mackail-Smith the outstanding forward on show, as he scored with two stunning strikes. Gordon Greer scored at both ends.

But Austin netted a hat-trick in Burnley’s next outing, adding to Peterborough’s pointless start in a 5-2 win, with Junior Stanislas scoring his first goal at Turf Moor, after Chris McCann had opened the scoring.

Next up were two testing trips to the East Midlands to take on Leicester City and Derby.

Dean Marney broke the net from Martin Paterson’s pull back to put the Clarets ahead, only for nemesis David Nugent and Jamie Vardy to hit back for the Foxes.

But after his double at Pride Park last season, Austin repeated the feat as Burnley came from behind to beat Derby, after Jamie Ward put the Rams ahead.

Austin also netted in the Capital One Cup third round on his return to Swindon, but Paulo Di Canio’s side emerged 3-1 winners.

September ended in controversy as Burnley, leading 2-1 at home to Millwall, had a Martin Paterson goal incorrectly disallowed to make it 3-1.

Typically, the Lions snatched an injury time equaliser through Darius Henderson to rub salt in the wound.
