Nelson made it nine successive wins on Saturday as they earned a 2-1 victory at Ashton Town to leave them 12 points clear at the top of the NWC First Division table.

The Blues have only five games remaining, with second place Formby having four games un hand, but an inferior goal difference.

Mark Fell was without the injured Jake Lloyd, Dan Mahoney and Joe O’Neill, with George Melling suspended and Sakeel Abdullah having left the club.

Danny Finch and Liam Boswell came in, and Nelson were ahead after nine minutes when skipper Robert Grimes scored with a trademark strike from distance.

Keeper Ben Woodhead was forced to save with his legs from home substitute Costello, but Ed O’Neill had a shot charged down after good wotj from Peter Wright.

In the first minute of the second half, a bad mix-up in the home defence led to Ed O’Neill stabbing the ball home to make it 2-0.

Thehome side put Nelson under pressure, and Liam Rushton outstripped the defence to beat Woodhead and halve the lead.

Matt O’Neill was fouled when through on goal at the other end, but the free kick was wasted, but the Blues managed to grind out another crucial three points as they look for promotion to the Premier Division.

Adnan Ahmed was man of the match for Nelson, who hope to have Mahoney and Joe O’Neill fit tomorrow when Mark Fell’s side host Leek CSOB (kick-off 3 p.m.) with all Burnley fans welcome.
