The hosts went ahead at the KCOM Stadium when Tom Huddlestone converted from the spot in the 72nd minute after defender Michael Keane was penalised for handling Kamil Grosicki’s corner.

The Tigers captain went to his left, with Heaton guessing correctly, but the England international couldn’t keep the ball out despite getting a big hand to it.

“I went the right way, not quite far enough, you could see my frustration afterwards,” he said. “They are such fine margins, but thankfully Keano comes up with the goods and I thought we were good for it.

“I was [confused at the penalty]. I made a save and when I saw him point down, I thought he had pointed for a goal kick, I didn’t quite see what happened. Barnesy said his arm got a nudge.”

However, Keane made amends just four minutes later as he cushioned record signing Robbie Brady’s set-piece before rifling the ball past Eldin Jakupovic.

“I think we showed a lot of character to get back up. I thought we played some good stuff, it was a very quiet game up until that point.

“Everyone talks about our away form but again today we stood up to a challenge came back into it and we are delighted with the point.”

After ending a succession of 2-1 defeats away from Turf Moor, Heaton added: “The performances have been much better of late, we’re much more towards our standard of performances and today it’s nice to get a result to go with that performance because we have felt it was coming.

“It’s important you get results to go with it to keep that belief and I think today is a good marker for the next few ones.

“This is our second point away from home now and we want to build on that.”

Heaton also praised the character of his team-mates after parking their FA Cup frustrations to one side.

Burnley responded admirably and the result against Marco Silva’s side maintained a healthy advantage over their rivals.

He said: “It was a disappointing day, but we don’t dwell on things. The manager preaches to us about one game at a time mentality. These things happen, it’s football, but we put it to bed and moved on.

“We’ve put ourselves in a great position in the league, but there’s a long way to go and it’s important we carry on and you saw today there was no hangover.”
